- Position Sizing Rule: Buy 100 units at $100.00 ($10,000.00 total allocation, or 40.00% of your $25,000.00 account) with a hard stop-loss at $95.00 ($5.00 risk/unit).
- Win-Rate Cushion: At a 1 : 3.00 Risk-to-Reward ratio, you need a 25.00% win rate to break even. Your 45.00% win rate provides a +20.00% positive edge (+$400.00 expected profit per trade).
- Drawdown Resilience: Risking $500.00 (2.00%) per trade, your account can withstand 5.0 consecutive losing trades before reaching your 10.00% ($2,500.00) drawdown limit.

Risk to Reward Formulas & Illustrative Example
Every metric in this calculator uses standard quantitative position-sizing and trade-expectancy equations. No hidden multipliers are applied.
ΔRisk = |Entry Price − Stop-Loss Price| | ΔReward = |Take-Profit Price − Entry Price|R = ΔReward ÷ ΔRisk (expressed as 1 : R)Units = (Account Balance × Risk %) ÷ ΔRisk = Dollar Risk ÷ ΔRiskBreak-Even % = [Net Risk ÷ (Net Reward + Net Risk)] × 100 = [1 ÷ (1 + R)] × 100E($) = (Win Rate × Net Reward $) − [(1 − Win Rate) × Net Risk $]Profit Factor = (Win Rate × Net Reward $) ÷ [(1 − Win Rate) × Net Risk $]Step-by-Step Illustrative Example
Suppose you manage a $25,000.00 trading account and risk 2.00% ($500.00) on a Long stock or crypto setup with an Entry Price of $100.00, a Stop-Loss Price of $95.00, a Take-Profit Target of $115.00, and a historical strategy win rate of 45.00% across 50 trades (with commissions and taxes excluded):
- Step 1 (Risk & Reward per Unit):
ΔRisk = |$100.00 − $95.00| = $5.00per unit (−5.00%).ΔReward = |$115.00 − $100.00| = $15.00per unit (+15.00%). - Step 2 (Risk-to-Reward Ratio):
R = $15.00 ÷ $5.00 = 3.00, producing a 1 : 3.00 Risk-to-Reward ratio. - Step 3 (Position Size & Capital Allocated):
Units = $500.00 ÷ $5.00 = 100 units. Buying 100 units at $100.00 requires $10,000.00 in capital (40.00% of your $25,000.00 account, or 0.40x leverage). If your target hits, gross profit is100 × $15.00 = $1,500.00(+6.00% account gain). - Step 4 (Break-Even Win Rate):
Break-Even % = [1 ÷ (1 + 3.00)] × 100 = 25.00%. You only need to win 1 out of every 4 trades to break even. - Step 5 (Expectancy & 50-Trade Projection): At a 45.00% win rate (0.45 win probability, 0.55 loss probability),
E($) = (0.45 × $1,500.00) − (0.55 × $500.00) = $675.00 − $275.00 = +$400.00per trade (+0.80R), with a Profit Factor of$675.00 ÷ $275.00 = 2.45. Over 50 trades, expected net profit is50 × $400.00 = +$20,000.00, growing the account to $45,000.00.
How to Use the Risk to Reward Calculator
- Select Your Solver Mode: Choose Standard (Entry / Stop / Target) to evaluate an existing chart setup, or switch to Target Price Solver (Find TP) to calculate the exact Take-Profit price needed for a target R-multiple.
- Enter Account Equity & Risk Allowance: Input your Account Balance and set your risk per trade as either a percentage (
%, typically 1%–2%) or a fixed dollar amount ($) using the inline unit dropdown. - Set Entry, Stop-Loss & Optional Costs: Enter your Entry and Stop-Loss prices (the calculator automatically detects Long vs. Short direction). Check Include Commissions & Taxes or expand + More Options to model round-trip broker fees, short-term capital gains tax, and multi-trade win-rate expectancy.
- Review Position Size & Export: Use the calculated unit size to place your order, inspect the 50-trade equity curve and win-rate matrix, and click Copy Result or Print / Save PDF to log the trade plan in your trading journal.

Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ)
Why does a 1:3 Risk-to-Reward ratio only require a 25% win rate to break even?
With a 1:3 Risk-to-Reward ratio, each winning trade earns 3 units of reward (+3R) while each losing trade costs 1 unit of risk (−1R). Out of every 4 trades, winning just 1 trade (+3R) and losing 3 trades (−3R) produces a net outcome of 0R ($0.00). Mathematically, Break-Even Win Rate = 1 ÷ (1 + 3) = 1 ÷ 4 = 25.00%.
How do trading commissions and slippage affect my true Risk-to-Reward ratio?
Round-trip commissions and slippage simultaneously reduce your net payout on winning trades and increase your net loss on stopped-out trades. For example, if you risk $100 to make $200 (gross 1:2.00) but pay $10 in round-trip commissions, your true net risk becomes $110 and your net reward drops to $190—reducing your effective Risk-to-Reward ratio to 1:1.73 and raising your break-even win rate from 33.33% to 36.67%.
How is position size connected to my Stop-Loss distance?
Your dollar risk per trade is fixed by your account risk tolerance (for example, 2% of $25,000 = $500), whereas your Stop-Loss distance is dictated by technical chart structure (Entry Price minus Stop-Loss Price). Dividing Dollar Risk by Per-Unit Stop Distance ensures that whether your stop is $1.00 wide (500 shares) or $10.00 wide (50 shares), a stop-out always loses the exact same $500.00.
What is the difference between R-Multiple Expectancy and Profit Factor?
Expectancy in R-multiples measures how many units of risk you expect to earn on average per trade: E(R) = (Win Rate × R) − Loss Rate. Profit Factor measures gross winning dollars divided by gross losing dollars: PF = (Win Rate × Net Win) ÷ (Loss Rate × Net Loss). Any strategy with Expectancy greater than 0R and Profit Factor greater than 1.00 is mathematically profitable over a large sample of trades.
