About the Add Days Calculator
The Add Days Calculator performs precision calendar calculations for professional scheduling, project management, legal notice periods, payroll cycles, and personal planning. By operating directly on local calendar dates rather than raw millisecond timestamps, it avoids Daylight Saving Time (DST) distortions and handles month-length variations and leap years seamlessly.
Calendar Days vs. Business Days
Standard calendar arithmetic adds every sequential sunrise-to-sunset day regardless of whether it falls on a weekend or public holiday. In contrast, commercial contracts, court filings, and shipping logistics frequently specify business days (workdays):
- Calendar Days: Every day from Sunday through Saturday is counted sequentially.
- Business Days (Workdays): Only Mondays, Tuesdays, Wednesdays, Thursdays, and Fridays are counted. Saturdays and Sundays are automatically bypassed.
- US Federal Holidays: When the holiday filter is engaged, official United States federal statutory holidays are skipped during business day iterations. When a fixed-date federal holiday falls on a weekend, the observed Friday (if Saturday) or Monday (if Sunday) rule is respected.
Month-End & Leap Year Adjustment Rules
When adding months or years to dates that land on the 29th, 30th, or 31st, Gregorian calendar month lengths differ (28 to 31 days). This calculator implements standard calendar pinning: adding 1 month to January 31 lands on February 28 (or February 29 during leap years). Leap years occur in years evenly divisible by 4, except for century years not divisible by 400 (e.g., 2000 and 2024 are leap years, but 1900 and 2100 are common years).
