About the ACT Score Calculator

The ACT is a standardized entrance examination utilized by colleges and universities throughout the United States to assess high school students' readiness for undergraduate coursework. Scoring consists of four distinct multiple-choice assessments—English, Mathematics, Reading, and Science. Each section is initially graded on a raw count of correct responses, which is subsequently converted into a normalized scaled score ranging from 1 to 36.

Composite Score & Rounding Rules

The ACT Composite score is calculated as the unweighted arithmetic mean of the four core sections:

  • Composite Calculation: Composite = round((English + Math + Reading + Science) ÷ 4)
  • Half-Point Rounding Rule: Under official ACT scoring guidelines, averages ending in decimals of .5 or greater round upwards to the nearest integer. For example:
    • Average 29.50 rounds up to 30
    • Average 29.75 rounds up to 30
    • Average 29.25 rounds down to 29
  • STEM Score: Computed as the rounded average of the Mathematics and Science scaled scores: STEM = round((Math + Science) ÷ 2).
  • No Penalty for Guessing: Raw scores are based strictly on the number of correct answers. There is zero negative deduction for incorrect answers or omitted questions.

ACT to SAT Concordance & National Percentiles

Standardized comparison tables established collaboratively by the College Board and ACT, Inc. map composite scores to national competitive percentiles and SAT scores:

How to Use This ACT Score Calculator

  1. Choose Your Mode: Select Raw Score to Scaled if you are scoring a completed practice test, or select Direct Scaled Section Scores to calculate composite from known 1–36 scores.
  2. Input Your Scores: Adjust the numeric fields or range sliders for English (out of 75), Math (out of 60), Reading (out of 40), and Science (out of 40).
  3. Review Section Feedback: Inspect the structured table to confirm whether your scores satisfy the official ACT College Readiness Benchmarks (English: 18, Math: 22, Reading: 22, Science: 23).
  4. Examine Visual Gauge & Concordance: Check the 2D visual dial, national percentile ranking, and equivalent SAT score for college admissions planning.

Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ)

Does the optional ACT Writing (Essay) test affect my Composite score? ▾
No. The optional ACT Writing test is evaluated on a standalone 2 to 12 scale and has zero numerical impact on your 1 to 36 Composite score. It is reported separately alongside an English Language Arts (ELA) score.
What is an ACT Superscore and how is it calculated? ▾
An ACT Superscore is the average of your highest scaled scores across all individual test attempts. ACT officially calculates and reports superscores automatically to participating colleges, allowing students to combine their best English, Math, Reading, and Science performances from different test dates into one optimal composite score.
What are the ACT College Readiness Benchmarks? ▾
ACT College Readiness Benchmarks represent the minimum section scores empirically linked to a 50% chance of obtaining a B or higher (or a 75% chance of obtaining a C or higher) in corresponding first-year credit-bearing college courses. The benchmarks are: English = 18 (English Composition), Math = 22 (College Algebra), Reading = 22 (Social Sciences), and Science = 23 (College Biology).
Why do different ACT test dates have slightly different raw score curves? ▾
ACT employs a rigorous psychometric process called equating. Because test difficulty naturally fluctuates slightly between different examination forms and dates, equating adjusts the raw-to-scaled conversion curve so that a score of 30 on one test date reflects the exact same level of achievement and aptitude as a 30 on any other test administration.
What is the ACT STEM score and how is it calculated? ▾
The ACT STEM score is the rounded average of your Mathematics and Science scaled scores: STEM = round((Math + Science) ÷ 2). It provides college admissions officers and STEM degree programs with a targeted metric of your scientific and quantitative competencies.
